A stunning coastal country that forms the southeastern border of the African continent, with picturesque beaches, secluded islands, abundant marine life, and vibrant culture, Mozambique is a fabulous finale to any southern Africa trip. While the country once boasted some of the best game reserves in the southern region, years of Portuguese rule followed by a brutal civil war, scavenged the country’s natural habitats and the wildlife within them. Years later, the country has begun to rebuild, forming transnational parks and rehabilitating reserves that soon hope to become game destinations within their own right.
The more accessible archipelago is Bazaruto, reachable from Vilanculous, a vibrant beach town with boutique resorts, colorful markets, welcoming locals, and endless water activities. Day trips to the six islands in the Bazaruto Archipelago and its marine national park offer pristine coral, ivory beaches, and cobalt waters. The larger islands of Bazaruto and Benguerra (where those looking for a more remote getaway are encouraged to stay) harbor beautiful freshwater lakes, open grasslands, forests of coconut trees, towering sand dunes and incredible wildlife including crocodiles, dolphins, whales and the little known dugong. The region is known for big game fishing and some of the best diving in the world along the protected Two Mile Reef. Horseback riding, dhow cruises, castaway picnics, snorkeling, nature walks, and cultural interactions are all on offer in this unique, laid bac paradise.
