Picture the excitement of children and young adults experiencing new adventures – whether it be exploring the remote regions of the Amazon, the wilds of Africa, up-close encounters with koalas and kangaroos in Australia, or chilling at an exclusive island resort. Multi-gen family travel offers the opportunity for active adventures such as horse riding, bicycling, hiking or snow /water sports as well as cultural and conservation focused events and of course, chill time uninterrupted by constant media. Imagine embarking on a journey that transcends generations, where the thrill of adventure meets the warmth of family bonding. Whether celebrating a special occasion, strengthening the family legacy or simply spending quality time with those you love, multi-generation family travel offers an unparalleled opportunity to connect with nature and with each other, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

The Thrill of the Wild

Latitude Expeditions presents below a few ideas that can help you achieve an extraordinary family experience: from exclusive-use, multi-bedroom villas fully staffed with a chef, childminders, housekeepers, guides and drivers, perhaps even a masseuse, to taking over a small boutique property with enough rooms for your family vacation.

Kenya – the original safari destination

There are a variety of exclusive use properties available in Kenya, depending on the size of your group. On the larger family side, we recommend an exclusive-use, 60,000-acre private wildlife conservancy, accommodating between 4 and 25 guests in a luxurious safari house. As a private Rhino Sanctuary and Wildlife Rescue Centre, it has a state-of-the-art Veterinary Clinic and is also home to endangered species such as the reticulated Giraffe, Grevy’s Zebra, Elephants, African Wild Dogs, Lions, Cheetahs, Greater Kudu, and Laikipia Hartebeest. The conservancy operates as a working cattle ranch and supports over 300 employees and their families through housing, healthcare, education, and community development programs. Your stay offers a variety of activities, including day and night game drives, walking safaris, horse-riding safaris and arm-chair safaris at a hide at the large watering hole. With nature at your doorstep, you will have the most up-close encounters with nature and local culture with visits to the Rescue Center and nearby tribal villages. The private residence is a design masterpiece featuring museum-quality artwork that offers one of Africa’s most exclusive accommodation experiences, with eleven bedrooms across eight cottages, available only to one group of guests at a time, where the entire conservancy is yours to explore.

Each offers a full team consisting of a dedicated host, chef, housekeepers, a wellness specialist, and a private Guide, along with exclusive safari vehicles, where every aspect of your experience can be personalized to suit any preferences, from mealtimes to activities. With a focus on nature and wellness, they offer a range of activities beyond game drives. Experience yoga and meditation practices with options like Vinyasa, Hatha, Yin, or Qigong complemented by sunset meditation sessions to enhance your physical health, mental clarity and inner peace. Enjoy physical activities such as hiking, biking, birding walks, pickleball, workouts in the fully equipped gym or a visit to he ancient petroglyph bao game carvings. Get creative with exceptional photography opportunities, with borrowed equipment and expert training. Take flight with a helicopter or balloon safari. Engage in local culture with a visit to the Mara Training Centre, a local hub of creativity, storytelling, teaching and sharing or enjoy Maasai warrior games, where you take part in archery, rungu throwing and jumping with the Maasai.

For smaller families, many safari properties offer family units, with multiple tents, cabins or adjoining villas and spacious common areas, designed for privacy and comfort of 4 to 10 family members. You may choose to stay at a family unit with full kitchens, game rooms, private pools and other amenities. Another option our clients have enjoyed is fully booking a small 4-8 room/tent/cabin safari property and having the whole place (and staff) to yourself.

Similar family-oriented properties are available in other safari destinations, including South Africa, Tanzania (Serengeti), Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and others.  You may even consider a visit by your family to a family of mountain gorillas or chimpanzees during a trekking visit to Rwanda or Uganda.
